Friday5 questions courtesy of Scrivener. Thank you!

June 5: Both sides now.

1. What side of you do people at work never see?

The playful, silly side. I have a serious, adult job.

I am The Responsible Person Who Goes To The Supply Closet And Refills The Stapler Because First And Second Shift Are Too Lazy.

And I will tell you how I am going to celebrate my special TRPWGTTSCARTSBFASSATL Day. By not refilling the stapler. It is getting to the point where I am thinking of getting my own stapler and Scotch tape dispenser and sticky paper.

Petty? I don’t think so.

Not when they have Cool Ranch Doritos and Mountain Dew Code Red and the vending machines are three feet from the supply closet.

Thank goodness I don't spend a lot of time at the office.

2. What will you be doing outside this weekend?

Convalescing.

3. What usual side dish do you frequently enjoy as an entree?

Salads. The three salads I am not particularly fond of are Waldorf, the fruit and vegetable genre such as spinach, strawberries, pineapple, blueberries, walnuts and red onion dressed in a vinaigrette and fruit fluff made with canned fruit cocktail. Fruit fluff AKA ambrosia made with fresh fruit and whipped cream is delicious. Ain't gonna cry if the mini marshmallows are omitted.

My favorite salad is my Seventeen Layer Salad. Sort of a combination of macaroni and Seven Layer Salad but with more stuff. For a warm summer evening supper, I boil the macaroni (I prefer large shells) and eggs and haul out the mandolin. Do all the cooking and vegetable prep work in the cool of the early morning before the kitchen gets all hotted up.

Layers can include tomato, peeled cucumber, scallion or mild onion, celery (strings removed before slicing), iceberg lettuce, watercress (I gather watercress at a spring), peas (preferably fresh; frozen will do), a cheese (I like provolone or real mozzarella made with water buffalo milk) and a meat or fish. Smoked salmon goes really well with a mayonnaise, sour cream and milk dressing. It wouldn't stand up well to Green Goddess.

For a nice presentation, carefully layer in a large, footed, straight-sided compote bowl. Arrange a "solid layer" such as tomato slices to prevent "porous layers" such as peas from trying to get to the bottom. Plop dressing on top of salad and serve with buttered toast. If it's just me, I run the extension cord and the toaster out to the backyard.

For a wine pairing — depending on the dressing — green Kool-Aid doesn't have the acidity of pink lemonade. A dry sparkling sake does well too. I think Flower Snow or Dreamy Clouds. More versatile than Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label. And a higher alcohol content.

Then there is Olivier salad, a mainstay on the zakuski table (Russian smörgåsbord). Boiled potatoes, dill pickles, peas, eggs, carrots, and bologna (ring bologna from the butcher or substitute mortadella)  dressed with mayonnaise. A pale version of the nineteenth century salat Olivye, the recipe of which is lost to time. Goes great with Stolichnaya vodka frozen in ice. Na Zdorovie! Kanpai!

I know I will forget some: seaweed, Cobb, Caprese, antipasto, Caesar, cucumber and onion, Wisconsin supper club wedge, lobster, Japanese / French / American / German potato salads...

4. What food that is flipped during cooking have you most recently consumed?

Had the worst cheeseburger of my life yesterday for lunch. And I thought hot lunch was bad during my brief matriculation in the public high school system. I even snuck down to the prison mess hall hospital cafeteria with my stupid IV thingy in tow.

How they managed to screw up a Jell-O and Cool Whip parfait is beyond me. Which was like the only thing left. And hospital gowns don't have pockets. Or backs. Good thing I remembered to bring a credit card.

5. What’s recently been a thorn in your side?

Normally I am naturally graceful but I sure was clumsy on Monday.

☐ Bonus question for people who can answer it: What album has a flawless B side?

So. 33⅓ vinyl.

The only SCANDAL album is Hello World. Everything else is DVD, CD, and digital. They did have an extremely limited 7" single from their Kitty Records days. Love the Hello World B side; however, flawless is the highest standard.

I don't care. I love it.

Hmmmm. Some Girls by The Rolling Stones.

Far Away Eyes.
Respectable.
Before They Make Me Run.
Beast Of Burden.
Shattered.

I suppose the first argument is going to be Far Away Eyes being a parody of both kinds of music. Country and western.

Sex Pistols. B side of Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols.

Seventeen.
Anarchy In The U K
Bodies
Pretty Vacant
New York
E M I

Loses a little traction on Bodies.

Ramones. Rocket To Russia.

Teenage Lobotomy.
Do You Wanna Dance?
I Wanna Be Well
I Can't Give You Anything
Ramona
Surfin' Bird.

Ramona is kind of clunky. Sounds like it's from some teenage angst movie. That dopey Rock 'N' Roll High School. Hey, everybody! There's a Ramones concert! And then the Ramones end up burning down the high school and everyone lives happily ever after because there must not be any arson laws.

If Joey Ramone was smart he'd have pinned the fire on Johnny Ramone. The proverbial two birds with one stone. Never did like that guy.

Judy And Mary. Miracle Driving.

Doki Doki.
Stereo Zenkai.
Oh! Can Not Angel
Platinum
Anemone No Koi
Kaerenai Futari

Pretty solid. Starts off with the effervescent jazzy poppy Doki Doki and ends with brooding Kaerenaifutari.

Sérgio Mendes And Brasil '66. Look Around.

The Look of Love.
Pra Dizer Adeus (To Say Goodbye).
Batucada.
So Many Stars.
Look Around.

I play this album at all my summer parties. Yo yo yo! DJ 勝美 pumping out da beats!

Couple of drinks. I just kind of close my eyes and mime the words while dancing slowly by myself to The Look Of Love.

I used to do the same kind of pretend self-absorbed thing when I'd go downtown to meet the girls for drinks on Friday afternoon. Kinda flip my hair over my shoulder while lighting my cigarette and ordering a martini. Dry, straight up, two olives please.

Meanwhile, back at the party all the guys will be falling over each other offering to wash dishes.

Once again I'm forgetting something. But then I'm not exactly on my game today. My friend Spewgie would tell you she's never seen me on my game. Oh well. I'm gonna go with Brasil '66.

Oooohhh. New York Dolls.

Trash
Bad Girl
Subway
Train
Pills
Private World
Jet Boy

Private World changes up the pace. Their second album, Too Much Too Soon, B side is really good too although Bad Detective is uncool. I pick up the tone arm and put it on the next track.

Puss 'n' Boots
Chatterbox
Bad Detective
Don't Start Me Talkin'
Human Being.

  1. That Sex Pistols album is pretty close to perfect from beginning to end, so I'll second your nomination. What do you think of Pizzicato Five? Not really related but since you like Japanese artists, I thought I'd ask.

    Get well soon.
